Transylvania, a region often associated with spooky castles and vampire legends, offers a whole new adventure beyond the typical tourist trail. In this article, I'll take you on a journey through the lesser-known treasures of Romania's mountains, specifically the captivating Harghita County.
A Hidden Gem in Central Romania
Harghita County, with its vast forests and majestic mountains, has remained largely off the international radar. This is a place where 85% of visitors are Romanian, which is surprising given the region's unique charm and affordable prices. Imagine the Dolomites or the Alps, but with a fraction of the crowds and a more authentic, local experience.
Cultural Heritage and Natural Wonders
The region's history is deeply rooted in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and its influence is evident in the local cuisine and architecture. The Székelys, a distinct cultural group of Hungarian descent, call this place home. Their traditional food, ornate wooden gates, and the silvery spires of churches create a unique cultural landscape.
Exploring the Countryside
Our journey begins in Brașov, heading north away from the tourist-filled Bran Castle. We discover a peaceful countryside, sharing the road with farmers and their horse-drawn carts. White storks nesting on electricity poles and churches with unique spires add to the charm.
Accommodations and Adventures
We stayed in self-catering lodges and cabins, each offering a unique experience. From the quiet Organicle Lodge with its garden and views of the Harghita mountains, to Vila Adela near Lacu Roșu with its fairy-tale-like garden, each accommodation provided a base for our adventures.
Wildlife Encounters and Natural Beauty
One of the highlights was the bear-watching experience. Harghita has an incredibly high density of bears, and we had the privilege of observing these majestic creatures up close. We also explored Saint Anne Lake, a volcanic lake surrounded by ancient-feeling peat bogs and lush forest greens.
Hiking and Peaceful Moments
The serene Gurghiu mountains provided a peaceful hiking experience. Cooking trout over an open fire, enjoying homemade cheese and sausage, and listening to the sounds of the forest, we felt a deep connection to nature. The trip was a battery charger for the soul, as our guide Samir put it.
Looping Back and Final Stops
As we looped back through the county, we visited the Mini Transylvania Park and Insect Park, offering unique models and displays. We also hiked to the top of Harghita Mădăraș, the highest peak in the Harghita mountains, where the weather added a dramatic touch to our adventure.
Kayaking and a Sense of Freedom
Our trip concluded with a kayaking adventure on Zetea Lake. Floating and drifting on the water, surrounded by nature, we felt a sense of peace and freedom. It was a perfect way to end our journey, leaving us with a deep appreciation for the beauty and tranquility of Harghita County.
In my opinion, Transylvania's mountains offer an incredible adventure, combining cultural heritage, natural wonders, and a sense of solitude. It's a place where you can truly connect with nature and experience a different side of Romania.
